Chapter 8: Hatches and Dashed Lines

The topics discussed in this chapter should be familiar to you from you experience drafting by hand. Hatches are used to indicate material in plan, elevation, section, or detail. Dashed lines are used to indicate an object position relative to the cutting plane. Dashed lines can also be used to indicate special wall assemblies (like fire rated walls etc.).

These two graphic conventions take a considerable amount of time and attention in manual drawing. AutoCAD simplifies the process of adding each to your design drawings.

This chapter includes and discusses the following AutoCAD commands and concepts:
  • Adding Hatches (Patterns) to your Drawing
  • The Boundary Hatch Command
  • Selecting a Hatch Pattern
  • Selecting an Area to Hatch
  • Typical Section and Detail Hatch Patterns
  • Typical Plan and Elevation Hatch Patterns
  • Adding Dashed Lines to your Drawing
  • Using Line Types
  • Typical Line Types
  • Adding Line Types to your Drawing
  • Setting the Line Type Scale
  • Learning Exercise
