Chapter 13: Drawing Symbols and Attributed Text

In previous chapters you learned the advantages of using blocks to organize repeating elements in your drawing like furniture and doors.  There are also graphic symbols used in design drawings that communicate the relationship between drawings in a presentation or in a set of construction drawings.   This second type of symbol contains text that changes to reflect the location of the referenced drawing or a description of the drawing.  While the number of sheets in a presentation or construction drawing will vary from two sheets to over 100 sheets, the purpose and use of these drawing symbols is always the same: to create a visual link between different drawings.

For example, a small presentation may contain one floor plan, two building sections, and four interior elevations.  The building section symbol is used in the floor plan drawing (sheet A1) to identify the location of the first building section cut and the location of the building section in the presentation (i.e. drawing 1 on sheet A2).  This symbol will also identify the second building section (i.e. drawing 2 on sheet A2).  The interior elevation symbol is used on the floor plan drawing to identify the walls that are elevated and the location of the interior elevations in the presentation (i.e. drawings 1, 2, 3, and 4 on sheet A3).
